Who We Are

SCROLL DOWN

Who We Are

The Boston Fellows program equips emerging leaders to serve Christ and neighbor in the working world.

We are passionate about workplace excellence, about the well-being of Greater Boston, and about Christ-like living. The Boston Fellows is a coalition of Boston churches: Church of the Cross (Boston), Christ the King (Cambridge), Grace Chapel and also partners with the Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics at Gordon Conwell Theological Theological Seminary. Boston Fellows is a service program of the Anglican Diocese of New England.

Founder and Director Kelly Madden leads the program, and facilitates its academic and spiritual dimensions in partnership with the Mockler Center for Faith and Ethics in the Workplace at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where he has taught as adjunct faculty member.

Prior to founding the Fellows program, Kelly was Director of Graduate Studies at the International Leadership Foundation. He taught Social Ethics and Personal Leadership Development and deepened the academic standards of the International Leadership University's six graduate schools in Africa. Working under African directors, he helped build political and community leaders with the integrity necessary to spearhead continental transformation. Before that he lived and worked in French-speaking Africa for 13 years, first as a chaplain to university students, then overseeing chaplaincy programs in 15 countries.  He has worked in 45 countries on five continents.

Kelly has a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell and a PhD in Political Theory from the University of York, England. He is the husband of Heather, the father of two adult children, Alex and Kathryn, and an ordained Anglican clergyman. He is far too serious about fly-fishing, live jazz, and the ukulele.

Contact Kelly to ask questions about the Boston Fellows, hosting a Fellows cohort in your church, how you can hire a Boston Fellow, or about giving to the Boston Fellows program!

Church Cohorts

Church Cohorts

Fellows learn and grow in the context of peers, mentors, and leaders of partnering churches.

Grace Chapel

“The 98 percent of Christians who are not in church-paid work are, on the whole, not equipped or envisioned for mission . . . . in 95 percent of their waking lives.  What a tragic waste of human potential!”
Mark Greene, speech to the Lausanne Conference 2010

As we look to the future, the aim of the church must be to equip people to take their place as leaders in God’s kingdom mission.  Sunday services alone, though, will not enable this vision to become a reality.  We need intentional, rigorous, holistic discipleship models that deliberately train Christians to embody the gospel in every aspect of their lives.  I am so thrilled that our church is partnering with the Boston Fellows program to provide an environment for this kind of transformation to occur.  As a pastor, I can’t wait to walk alongside a cohort of fellows to engage topics like vocation, workplace ethics, cultural renewal, and how to experience God through work.  I’m convinced we will all come to better appreciate the reality that work is not an obstacle to God, but the primary avenue in which our spiritual formation occurs. Let’s get to it!

Christ the King

At Christ the King Cambridge, the Boston Fellows program provides space for young professionals to reflect, biblically and theologically, on their vocation, in the community of the local church, and for the lasting good of the city. Our vision is that Fellows would be discipled in their vocations and integrated into the life of the church through meaningful relationships with one another, and with expert mentors and pastors. Above all, we long for them to taste and see the goodness of the God who has called them into their work, even as He has offered them rest in Jesus.

Church of the Cross

"I wish there had been a program like this when I was getting started.”

That's how senior professionals typically respond when I describe the Boston Fellows. So few of them have had the resources to dig into the meaning of vocation, or to develop specific spiritual habits to sustain them on their career track. Let alone the close company of peers helping each other excel in these pursuits! So it’s my delight to help facilitate our cohort here at Church of the Cross, in addition to directing the Boston Fellows program overall.
